In the present times, long-distance cycling tours have become increasingly popular because they refresh one’s body, mind, and soul. Although it seems like fun, the success of your trip greatly relies on proper planning. Let us explore some of the necessary steps that you must undertake to make the journey seamless.

• A Well-Defined Sketch of the Route-

Are you keen on taking an independent trip? If yes, prepare your itinerary with utmost caution. You need to choose routes that are challenging and safe at the same time. In the case of guided tours, however, skilled professionals would prepare your journey and assure its accomplishment.

• Proper Dresses and Shoes-

Remember that you need to pedal for miles and you would simply not get time for changing your clothes. So, wear outfits that could withstand all the exhaustion, sweat, dirt, and dust. Padded shorts with breathable jersey would let you feel comfortable all day long. Do not forget to wear gloves and helmets, which would protect you from injuries. Clip-in shoes, perhaps the best for cycling trips. Make sure to carry extra footwear.

• Sufficient Water and High-Energy Edibles-

You have to stay hydrated and energetic all through the trip. Thus, be sure to carry plenty of water bottles and whole-grain bars. It is better if you avoid the energy drinks, which might lead to a sugar crash.

• Essential Warm-Ups-

You have to make your body ready for long-distance cycling and that is possible only through extensive training or rigorous workout sessions. Jog before the trip. This would reduce risks of cramps. Do not push your limits. Cycle at a normal speed because this is not a race and you would not be awarded for coming first. Remember to take necessary breaks.

• Servicing of the Cycles and an Emergency Kit-

Before participating in the trip, make sure to get your bikes serviced. Also, learn the ways of changing tires so that you can avoid unnecessary difficulties during the trip. Carry an emergency kit with tire pump and patches. Also pack first-aid items like band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and some common medications.

Whether you are old or young, sedentary or athletic, biking is a great activity that lets you make the most out of each moment spent outside. This sport is a healthy way to experience the outdoors and to stay fit. However, biking is definitely something you need to master if you want to fully reap the benefits of flawless bike rides.

In order to help you improve your performance, enjoy increased safety while biking and stay comfortable, we have put together 7 tips for improved bike rides. Make the most out of the following tips and take your biking skills to the next level.

1. Wear a Helmet

Wearing a helmet is imperative when biking, especially if you want to protect yourself from serious head injury and to get the peace of mind that you are safe. In the US alone, more than 6,000 cyclists are involved in accidents and suffer severe head injuries. Head trauma accounts for more than 75% of fatalities among biking enthusiasts. Choose the right helmet for your needs and enjoy an improved level of security.

2. Pick the Right Seat

In order to enjoy improved bike rides you should pay extra attention to picking the right seat for your needs. While wider saddles are easier to install and provide you with more comfort, those hard, narrow seats are perfect for racers. Do not forget to adjust the seat so it suits your height.

3. Dress Comfortable

Say no to jeans or jackets when biking. Instead, consider wearing a pair of cycling shorts and a comfortable t-shirt. Do not hesitate to invest a little more in your outfit – the investment will pay off in time by keeping you comfortable and enhancing your biking experience.

4. Start Slowly

In case you are out of shape, do not go all in from the first time. Pedal on flat terrain for a few weeks before trying to conquer that mountain peak or winning that marathon.

5. Share the Fun

Riding with other people can greatly improve your biking experience. In order to enjoy perfect bike rides, remember to share the fun and bring some new friends with you. Riding in a group is the best way to make the miles go faster and to keep yourself motivated.

6. Stay Traffic-Savvy

When riding your bike it is imperative to ensure that you are traffic savvy. If you are riding in heavy traffic or you are down on a narrow road, make sure to attach a rear-view mirror to the front of your bike. This way you will always know when a reckless driver from behind might pose a threat to your life.

7. Change Positions

Lastly, in order to make the most out of your biking experience, it is wise to vary your body and hands position so that various groups of muscles are used.

Your bike rides will definitely look different now that you are using these tips. Share the fun with others, remain traffic-savvy, dress comfortable and change positions as often as you can to work all of your muscle groups.

Bike shop Central Coast

Whenever you take your bike out for a ride, we want you to have fun. So, we want you to enjoy your bike riding every day. Because of this, we at your Central Coast bike shop want to help you care for your bike properly. Lets face it, we are on the coast and Beach Cruisers won’t maintain themselves will they? Therefore a longer life for your bike too. This means we gather articles to help you so the task will be easier for you. This leads to more fun on your bike. Naturally we love that!

Beach Cruiser Maintenance

The Chain

Mud, dirt and salt water can break down bike components. The chain will last much longer with thorough cleaning and lubrication on a regular schedule. Prior to cleaning your chain ensure you have the right tools for the job. A good degreaser, Simple Green works well, will not damage the chain. A chain brush or old toothbrush to scrub. A towel for wiping of grease. And of course chain lubricant for relubing the chain once the chain is cleaned. To clean the chain mix 1 part water with 1 part degreaser. You can mix this into a bucket or cup. Dip the toothbrush or chain brush into the degreaser mixture. Scrub the chain and sprockets to remove any built up grease or debris. Once cleaned wipe down the chain and sprockets. To lube the chain it is recommended to spray the lube while spinning the back tire. I recommend lubing all moving parts and joints of the chain. Wipe up any access lube when chain lubrication is complete.

Brakes

Check the brake pads to ensure they are not excessively worn. If worn and not making good contact replace the brake pads. If your bike has a hand brake then clean the brake cable. Ensure there is not excessive grease or debris built up at the end of the cable.

Derailer (If 7 speed bike)

The derailer can be cleaned similar to the chain. The derailer does not need to lubricated. It will require degreasing if there is excessive build up of grease or debris.

Tires

It is recommended to check the tire pressure before each ride. Tires can lose pressure overnight. Get a decent floor pump and check each day. The PSI (pounds per square inch) will be indicated on the side of the tire. It is also a good idea to look at the tires and check for damage or excessive wear. Properly inflated and maintained tires will last longer.

Bike Lubrication

The following areas will need to be lubricated at least annually: Derailers, All levers, All cables, Any moving parts of the chain.

Also check all nuts, bolts, seat stem and handle bar stem for loosening and excessive wear. This should be done at least annually but more often if riding in muddy, sandy or wet areas.

Clean your bike often to keep it running well and looking nice. A nice teflon or silicone bike polish will help to maintain your bike sheen, make it look great and help protect the paint. Simply clean the bike with water, follow the steps above for maintaining your chain, brake and tires then apply polish. Enjoy the Ride!
